More on Grayson
After his initial surgery on the 25th of April 2008, Grayson stayed in the hospital for a week and on Thursday, Dr. Matlack decided that he was no longer okay and that inn the morning of the 2nd, he would have to go in and do an exploratory surgery. When he went in he found an adhesion, which he described like a piece of rope. When he first told us about the surgery, he said that Grayson would have to have another ostomy bag for at least 2 years. Let me tell you that was disheartening!! Tiff and I hoped that would not be the case. Dr. Matlack also mentioned that the scar tissue usually takes 7 to 8 weeks to form and of course; Grayson formed his in less than 7 days. He knew this because it was not there the week before. After his surgery, he seemed stable and was resting. On Sat. night, the docs wanted him to rest and so they gave him a good dose of Morphine. After spending the night with Tiff's Aunt Pam and Uncle Warren (and the dogs)...we found out that in the early morning his breathing had struggled and they had to bag him and give him compressions a couple of times to help him out. That was very nerve racking. We went up to the hospital and he was just resting and was in a lot of pain. That Saturday, he seemed to be fine. So, we went back to Woods Cross and hung out there again. The next morning about 10:00, we got a call which said that Grayson had coded and that he required 5 minutes of compressions in order to keep his heart rate above 50 bpm.
That was down right scary!! We rushed to the hospital and found Grayson looking very pale and very sedated. Most of the day they had him on the morphine and versed. If he moved too much, they would give him another dose. The Doc was worried that he might crash again and they could not tell us what had happened nor why it had happened and the worst part was they could not prevent it from happening again.
That Sunday was one of the hardest days for Tiff and I; we felt that we might be seeing Grayson for the last time. A special thanks to the family members that helped us give him a blessing.
On Monday, Dr. Moon came in and asked "Why this kid was on the vent?" "He can breathe on his own" So she took him off of the versed and hung a bag of something that would wear off faster. She wanted to see what he could do on his own. Once he was sort of awake, she had the vent settings changed from constant to supportive. This meant that it would breath for him only when he needed it. The rest of that Monday was watching to make sure he was breathing fine and his sats were high enough.
The rest of that night he went off of the vent and just had oxygen in a nasal canula, if I remember right, then the rest of the week he had a huge belly and was very uncomfortable. he had a ton of air and was not pooping.
On Monday night the 12 of May, he had a bottle and Doctor Matlack called in a specialist to see why his colon has not started to function. Throughout this week they are trying different formulas and things to see if it is the food they are putting in.
Today Dr. Matlack say that if he does not start working by Tuesday; they will have to go back in and see if there is a physical problem. We are very prayerful and hopeful that is not the case. We will have to wait and see....that is our update for this week. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
Jim and Tiff
